Get a roof over your head: Nike unveils new Team USA basketball uniforms

It looks like they are playing for Team LISA.

Nike has unveiled the new uniforms for  the men’s 2012 USA basketball team. For the most part, these uniforms are pretty clean except for the name script.

But before I get into that, let’s take a look at the description of these new uniforms from Nike themselves.

Combining NIKE’S lightest, most technologically advanced textiles with iconic graphics, the Nike Hyper Elite Basketball Uniform helps boost players’ performance and communicates the pride of USA Basketball.

The innovation begins with Nike Aerographics, an engineered fabric that is a passive cooling solution allowing greater design and graphic flexibility while creating mesh areas in a garment without adding seams. It adds graphic interest to a garment that actually contributes to the performance by increasing air circulation. The Nike Hyper Elite Shorts to be worn by the USA Basketball team alone weigh in at 14 ounces lighter than the average shorts currently worn by professional players. Further, since unveiling Nike Aerographics in 2008, the NIKE design team has harnessed the technology’s bold design applications and endless graphic possibilities.

Taking these advancements into account, the NIKE Hyper Elite Jersey, our lightest jersey ever, features a breathable and durable design with striking Nike Aerographics. Its 3D-structured Dri-FIT fabric helps pull sweat away from the skin and reduce cling while a functional flock screenprint on the inside of the collar provides further sweat management. The sleeveless v-neck silhouette, including hem vents and modified armholes, offers mobility while the slim fit reduces bulkiness and distraction.

These uniforms are very simple in terms of visuals. At least from the front, it’s clean cut and there’s not too much going on. When looking at it, you can tell this was a design made in this century (compared to the 1996 uniform set that screamed mid-90s).

However, according to the Nike video, the back of the jersey will feature some designs. I can only assume that it’s probably the same kind of nonsense they had the last time they went to the Olympics. (You can also see the red and blue versions of the uniform in the video.)

But the biggest thing that stood out to me was the script of “USA” in the front. Looking at it, it feels like the name is a roof to the player’s number. Then after I looked at it again, it then got me thinking of other things that looked similar.

White Castle? Mountain West? Stealth bomber? And why did they use the “S” that became a famous mid-90s faux graffiti style?

It really wasn’t a very strongly executed script. It gives me the impression of some kind of knight in shining armor feel. (And maybe that has to do with it looking like White Castle’s logo.) But then again, maybe that’s what they’re going for on the uniform.

What I do like is that the flag is a shoulder patch, which I think is a very nice touch. In fact, I hope all countries have their flags as a patch.

I’m not too excited about these new uniforms but it could be a lot worse. And I bet sales at White Castle will increase a little during the Olympics.
