Giants star Osi Umenyiora tries to do right thing for Lawrence Taylor with selfish Twitter act

Attn:All L.T, NYG, NFL FANS! If i get 1million followers, i will buy L.T’s ring back and give it to him. The 1,000,000th will give it to him

Check out this tweet by Osi Umenyiora. He’s referring to this auction of Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl ring. (LINK TO AUCTION)

At first I thought that the idea of buying the ring and returning it to L.T. was a nice gesture, and it is. But after a little bit, I realized that this has got to be one of the most selfish acts I’ve heard an athlete do behind the idea of doing good.

Umenyiora is seeking attention to himself as he is asking for new Twitter followers. He’s not asking for retweets, rather he’s asking people to follow him on Twitter. He wants to up his online profile.

“Follow me on Twitter. And if you do, I might do something nice.”

That’s basically what he’s saying.

And second of all, why one million followers? As I write this, he is currently 972,965 followers away from one million. He’s basically asking for an impossible task to be done but in the process he will gather as many followers as he can.

And oh yeah, the auction ends in less than 10 hours. Good luck getting one million followers, Osi. You’ve gotten 3% of the one million you need already.

(This reminds me of old baseball commercials on the radio where a charity will donate $200 for every grand slam hit on Sunday. In Osi’s case, it’s three unassisted triple plays in the 5th inning of the first game of a doubleheader.)

To put in perspective, there are 903 Twitter accounts right now that have at least a million followers. Those accounts go from Lady Gaga, Chad Ochocinco, Barack Obama and Eminem. One of the accounts belong to author J.K. Rowling. She joined Twitter in 2009 and has tweeted only 12 times since signing up. Over a million followers and barely active.

(The Beatles have 783,880 followers and they broke up more than 40 years ago.)

So unless you’re a megastar athlete, loudmouth, pop culture icon, meme account or political leader, you’re not getting a million followers. He’s is not any of that. His only chance is if the Top 10 Twitter accounts all retweeted him, but that’s not going to happen.

So here’s to you Osi Umenyiora. Your heart is probably in the right place, but being conceited and selfish about it is just not right. If you genuinely cared, you wouldn’t have conjured up this self-centered, attention grabbing idea.

L.T is a football LEGEND! If 1,000,000 people support him getting his ring back, then its worth it to me to buy it and give it back to him

This issue is only important to him if he gets what he wants, which is a million followers. I guess he really doesn’t care.

EDIT

This guy still doesn’t get it.

Conditional caring
