Did the 49ers deserve to win at the ESPYs? I don’t think so

Last night, the San Francisco 49ers (and the New Orleans Saints) won the award for Best Game of the Year at the ESPYs. I covered that game and saw it live. It was one of the greatest games I have ever seen.

But it wasn’t the best game of the year.

As Mike Klis of the Denver Post points out, Game 6 of the World Series was a whole lot better — and I didn’t even watch the game (I was at a concert).

The fact that the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th to stay alive in that game was amazing. The Rangers had the win, but the Cardinals never gave up. That might have been the most exciting game in baseball history.

But then again, baseball is my favorite sport so there is some bias there.

Compared to the 49ers game, the Cardinals had drama and high stakes that was at a whole different level. But as Klis points out, football is king in this country.

  1. I’m a huge Niners and Cardinals fan. I can’t decide which one was better. I was at BWW in Hawaii watching the Niners game and the place was electric. I was in Denver watching Game 6 at a Cubs bar and the place was electric. Both were in the top 5 moments for me of all time for my teams. Since the Cards game was in a Championship moment, I’d go for Game 6.

  2. As a 49er fan I thought the 49ers vs Saints was the best game of the year. We had been accustomed to see Alex Smith miserably fail to produce highlight reels but that game was entertaining. There didn’t need to be a highlight reel, watching the game was enough. The hits, watching Smith react, seeing the bull rush by Justin, and watching the 49ers as target of the Saints’ bounty was like watching the Wild West or Godfather. The 49ers made big hits and didn’t need a bounty to do that. Pure entertainment!
