If you missed today’s game, you missed out on a great hockey battle. I normally don’t write much about hockey but it is actually my second favorite sport to watch. And this battle had everything you wanted in a great, exciting hockey game.
The rivalry between these two teams is so intense that every time these two meet, it’s going to be great. This time, the Sharks are trying to catch up to the Kings to win the Pacific division and I was just so amazed at the grittiness that the Sharks displayed on the ice.
Throughout the season, especially last month, the Sharks didn’t look all that great. They were not in sync and they were losing to lesser teams. But with desperation in their eyes, they’ve won six of their last eight games and capped off this streak with an amazing win over the Kings.
What was so awesome about this game was that not only did Ryane Clowe and Joe Thornton get Gordie Howe hat tricks, but their fights set the tone for the game. The playoff atmosphere was there and the Sharks grew a new pair today.
The team still has a chance to win the division and they can do it with a win against these Kings on Saturday (and hoping that the Coyotes don’t do anything). But after seeing this back and forth battle today where the players laid it out on the line, I really do hope that Saturday’s game does have meaning. These two teams hate each other and it’s only fitting that they end the regular season in battle trying to get that division title.
Thornton, Clowe, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski all stepped on and they need to carry that great momentum into the playoffs. Antti Niemi played well but needs to get a little better also. This team is getting hot at the right time.
