My prediction for tonight’s Home Run Derby

This is how you celebrate a walk-off win!

I couldn’t have asked for anything better on my birthday yesterday. I normally don’t celebrate birthdays. I usually just go to an A’s game. But since I live in Los Angeles now, I can’t do that. But with the A’s wearing those gorgeous Oakland Oaks throwbacks (which I want), I couldn’t be happier after that walk-off win.

The A’s are at .500 and are only 2.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot. I’m so excited!

But now that we’re at the All-Star Break, I am looking forward to tonight’s Home Run Derby. This is one thing that I feel that can get really boring and annoying (with Chris Berman’s “back-back-back-back”) but no matter what anyone says, home runs are always fun to watch.

So with that, here are my predictions for the derby.

Team AL:

  • Robinson Cano (defending champ & captain)
  • Jose Bautista
  • Prince Fielder
  • Mark Trumbo

Team NL:

  • Matt Kemp (captain)
  • Carlos Beltran
  • Carlos Gonzalez
  • Andrew McCutchen

Kauffman Stadium isn’t a very huge ballpark with any kind of oddities in terms of dimensions. So there isn’t any particular advantage for any player, but looking at the list of players, it just seems to me that the AL just has a lot more power.

I don’t know how Kemp is going to do after coming of the disabled list and the other three aren’t known to be big home run guys. Beltran might have a little advantage since he used to play for the Royals but I don’t know if he’ll make a big splash.

On the AL side, I see Cano and Bautista both making it into the final. Cano has a very beautiful swing and seeing how he did in last year’s derby, I don’t think he’ll get tired after two rounds.

Baustista is just a great power hitter and when the ball connects with the bat, it explodes. For the past few seasons, he has been a great player to watch and I see it translating well into the derby.

But I think with Cano’s experience from last year and his nice compact swing, he’ll beat Bautista to defend his title.
