If you haven’t heard the news, Terrell Owens is joining the Seattle Seahawks on a one-year deal. This comes to me as a surprise as I thought his NFL days were over. He hasn’t played since 2010 and was coming off knee surgery.
But Pete Carroll apparently likes trouble making wide receivers. They have Braylon Edwards, had Antonio Bryant, and now T.O. joins the mix.
This is an odd time for Owens because instead of celebrating from the public, most are now laughing and wondering when he’s going to screw up. With his history of selfishness, locker room troubles, off-field issues with child support, and everything else, nobody seems to believe that he is worth the trouble.
Even though he has put up Hall of Fame numbers in his career, he has hurt so many people in the process. He has tarnished friendships, hurt organizations, and has caused stress all over the country.
So with this signing, it’s a shame that people aren’t asking “How will he do?” Instead they are asking “How will he screw it up?” They’re wondering about the possibly disaster scenarios instead of the potential positives.
That’s what Owens has brought to himself. That’s what he deserves from now on. It’s not fair to continually judge a man for his mistakes, but at the same time, we don’t know any other T.O.
So with this signing, I would like to believe that Owens would keep his mouth shut, play hard and be a respectful teammate. But if history is any indication, we’re just being naive to really think that’s going to happen.
