Today is the final day of 2012 and we have gone through a lot of notable uniforms changes this year. In fact, there have been a lot of changes that have impressed me while there have been plenty that have made me rethink some poor decisions. But after seeing all that the uniform world has to offer, I feel that a best and worst dressed list is necessary for us to look back at history and remember what to avoid and what we can try again.
This list is a simple list. I am not going to make this a real awards show with numerous nominations. I just want to take what I like and don’t like and sprinkle in a few nominations for the sports I watch frequently. I’ll look into the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL and college basketball and football.
To qualify for this list, the uniform element must be a new set that debuted and was used for in-game action in 2012. That’s pretty much it. Let’s go take a look at the list for the National Basketball Association.
** Remember, this is all in my opinion. There is no right and wrong to this. I can’t name everything and I hope I didn’t miss anything.
NBA’s Best and Worst Dressed
BEST: BROOKLYN NETS
Simple black and white was a change to the Nets that I welcomed. Not only did their uniform set look very simple, but the use of the herringbone on the uniform and court also added to their look. The NBA wants to simplify their team looks and this is something that I think really takes the cake. Not all teams can pull this off, but with a new location, arena and everything else, this works.
DENVER NUGGETS – A throwback feel to their current color scheme. I am so happy that they went this route. The original rainbow to me was great and this is a great tribute. Promo pictures could’ve been better.
CLEVELAND CAVALIERS – Moving away from the LeBron James era gave them an opportunity to add another clean, simple look to their set.
PHILADELPHIA 76ERS – New blue alternates is a high five.
WORST: THAT CHRISTMAS DAY DEBACLE
CHARLOTTE BOBCATS – Barely a decade of existence and the fourth uniform change. Bad.
OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER – You’re not the Royals, so don’t copy them. Confused identity right here.
ALL-STAR GAME – Reason #865 why I hate Adidas.
MIAMI HEAT – I like their nWo look, but now this was them trying too hard. I couldn’t figure out who was who watching on TV.
MATCHUP OF THE YEAR: LAKERS VS HEAT (JANUARY 18)
Here are some other notable uniform and visual instances in 2012 (outside of my lists) that are also worth mentioning.
- Team USA’s gray medal ceremony outfits just doesn’t feel American. So little red, white and blue.
- USA Basketball team throwing back to anniversary of the greatest team ever assembled.
- Burning fake jerseys out of protest sends a confusing message.
- High school uniforms trying too hard.
- Oakland Oaks throwbacks.
- I can’t wait for these 1990s throwbacks to show up later this season.
- Nike, take your time.
- Kobe Bryant thinks he’s Catwoman.
- Apparently stickers on cap is a bigger issue than I thought.
- LOL NASCAR.
- Frederick Douglass. Don King. Andrew Bynum.
What other notable uniform, logo or any other visual changes this year did I miss? What did you like or hate?
