San Jose Sharks to wear George Gund III memorial decal on helmets and jersey patch

A few days ago, former San Jose Sharks owner George Gund III died at the age of 75 from stomach cancer. The team was expected to wear some kind of memorial deca for their former owner and they unveiled it today on their Twitter.

It’s a simple decal that takes the shape of one of their alternate logos and just replacing the shark with Gund’s initials.

It’s a nice gesture and I expect that the team might wear a jersey patch for this too. I just wish they chose a better logo.

Gund ended his tenure with the team in 2002 and the logo the team is using for the decal did not exist until the 2007-08 season. Why couldn’t the team use a logo that reflected the time period in which Gund was with the team?

I think they should have gone the route of their memorial for Warren A. Strelow. I understand that the old logo wouldn’t match with the current set, but there had to be some kind of way to honor Gund’s contribution since the team’s inception.

Maybe a simple black circle with his initials would do. But I suppose if the team is going to use a logo, it makes sense to use something that matches their set.

UPDATE 10:00AM PT

Apparently the Sharks are going to use a patch reflective of their old team colors.
