Stephen A. Smith embracing debate with the wrong kind of hockey information

Comparing the winning streak from the Miami Heat (14 straight wins) and the Chicago Blackhawks’ point streak (19-0-3 record) is difficult. Both are different, yet Stephen A. Smith decided to do it anyway and ended up giving us all kind of misinformation.

In the segment, Smith says that he finds the Blackhawks streak less impressive because of the three ties. The problem here is that the NHL hasn’t had a tie game since 2004. The three “ties” Smith refers to are shootout losses. But the Blackhawks still get a point for getting a game into overtime.

The misinformation is pretty bad. I don’t know why they would allow someone to talk hockey when they know nothing about it. In fact, Smith’s confession that he didn’t know the Blue Jackets existed is equally bad. He’s not the first one to make that mistake, but Smith has no excuse.

This is all kinds of bad and it sucks because hockey is important but when this kind of misinformation is put out there, it hurts the league’s growth. I am glad Barry Melrose (the only hockey on-air guy) immediately set the record straight.

So which is more impressive? I’m leaning towards the Heat but in all honesty, who really cares?
