Los Angeles Kings ditching purple from color scheme

The Kings announced Thursday that they will be eliminating purple from their color scheme. The color has had a lot of history but recently, they’ve switched to the black and silver scheme (and the first time they had it a little before Wayne Gretzky’s arrival).

To me, the color purple has always been associated with yoyalty. In the NBA, that’s what the Kings have emphasized for many years. And in the NHL, the Kings’ best looks in my opinion are with purple.

I remember when the Kings switched to the black and silver in the late `80s. Part of it was cultural and possibly some of it was influenced by the Raiders. Either way, the color scheme had an attitude and it was very popular.

But with their recent success and their switch to making black and silver their primary, purple was going to be phased it. It was expected and now we know it will be a fact. Unfortunately, the purple to me just seems to be a better identity for the team.

We’ll see how this goes. It could be great for merchandising but it’s a shame that the Kings are dropping purple.
