Critiquing Cal’s uniform makeover for football, volleyball and basketball

It’s OK. Nothing to get all worked up about.

Now we get to see what Cal’s new image will look like. The team introduced us to a set of new uniforms by Nike. Here is the press release for it.

My first reaction was to the logo. The school says they want to emphasize gray. I don’t think it was necessary. I didn’t think it was necessary to even add this logo. But because of it, we see it now on the shoulder, pants and numerals. OVERLOAD!

Plus, because of the shoulder logo, once against Cal doesn’t get any TV numbers. Not a big deal, but I like TV numbers.

The collar design is OK. Nothing really standing out about it since it’s a little similar to their old set. The numeral font works with the sleek design. I would have liked the classic font they had been using but this I don’t mind too much.

What really bothers me is the matte helmet. I think matte helmets are a fad and it sucks that Cal got sucked into it. Is it me or is the face mask back? There’s no stripe down the helmet, which was something I liked from the old design.

Overall, it’s OK. Nothing really to get worked up about. Even the pants stripe doesn’t really give me much reaction. It doesn’t really seem to be a change that was needed but a change that isn’t too different from the old set.

As for the volleyball sets, I love the solid blue look but their white one is nice with the sleeve stripes. Simple and nothing complicated.

I also like the simplicity of the women’s basketball jersey. The new wordmark is something I’ll adjust to, but it’s not too crazy. I can dig it.

This comes to a case where I will have to wait to see what it looks like on the field/court before having a full decision. I am glad that it’s not too crazy of a change so for now, I can say it’s a nice change for Cal.
