OK, I think I get Dodgers fans now. Having lived in LA for about a year now, I get a sense of how Dodgers treat their superstars. I remember Manny Ramirez, Hideo Nomo and have read stories about Fernando Valenzuela.
All of those were great stories for the Dodgers, but Yasiel Puig has taken it to another level. The excitement is so crazy, fans have shelled out money like never before. This is from the LA Times.
The Dodgers sold more Puig-related merchandise from Thursday to Sunday than they had ever sold of any player over a four-day period — more than even Manny Ramirez,Fernando Valenzuela or Hideo Nomo, according to a team spokesperson.
The team sold approximately 3,000 units of Puig-related merchandise in that four-day window, including 1,600 T-shirts ($28), 400 “Viva Puig” T-shirts ($28) and 600 jerseys ($225 for the authentic version, $110 for the replicas).
That’s pretty crazy. He’s a talented player so it’s justifiable to be excited about him.
But of course, Dodgers fans are pretty crazy folks. No other ballpark have I been to where getting into and out of the parking lot is such a hassle. Never have I seen so many fans leave in the seventh inning no matter what the score. Never have I seen so many beach balls just flying all over the place. And now, never have I seen so much money given to a team that has underwhelmed all season long.
Dodger baseball and their fans. I’ve seen it and I still don’t get it.
