Baseball writer Keith Law doesn’t like that the A’s did a nice thing today.

The Oakland Athletics gave Derek Jeter a farewell gift, which included over $10,000 to Jeter’s charity Turn 2. This is the charity’s mission statement:

To create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “TURN 2” healthy lifestyles. Through these ventures, the Foundation strives to create outlets that promote and reward academic excellence, leadership development and positive behavior. Turn 2’s goal is to see the children of these programs grow safely and successfully into adulthood and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Sounds like a great foundation that looks out for the well-being of children and their future. But then Law tweeted this:

Sure sounds like the Festivus episode from Seinfeld. George didn’t like people giving him gifts by donating to charities in their name. Law believes the A’s should have given the money to another foundation. Apparently, one foundation is better than the other?

He does know that the A’s donated to Jeter’s charity. But he’s under impression that Jeter’s charity is misusing funds even though he has no proof. He’s just going off the assumption that the goals set by the foundation are not possible to meet.

Do we know if the Alameda County Community Food Bank, Law’s suggestion, isn’t misusing funds? Law seems to believe that because he doesn’t have all the information, he can attack the A’s. No charity is perfect, but it doesn’t seem fair to judge one foundation based on assumptions.

Of course, we have some people who did not like Law’s tweet accusing A’s of donating to the wrong charity.

What an odd choice to call out something based on assumption.
