Kobe Bryant’s going to retire and I’m glad the villain is gone

This news didn’t come as a surprise as we saw Kobe Bryant fall apart and become a bandaged player that he once was. His shots were falling short and his mobility was limited. He has given his body everything he could in 20 years of basketball and this has become a sad ending to a storied career.

But I don’t care.

As much as I know and understand how great of a basketball player he is, I honestly don’t have any feelings toward this news or anything else right. I knew it was sad when his decline began a few years ago, but now it just feels like it’s been dragged out.

Growing up in the Bay Area as a Warriors fan, perception of basketball was different than the rest of the world. I wasn’t used to seeing my team win. I wasn’t used to seeing great superstars come through Oakland and staying. I didn’t think my team was good enough and they weren’t. I always had to look up at the Lakers and see them winning all the time and I didn’t like it. And Kobe Bryant was a big part of that. So in an essence, I didn’t like him. Continue reading

Celebrating and appreciating the Warriors’ 16-0 record

Throughout this entire streak, I think about how long I have been a Warriors fan. I couldn’t even believe that this team I cheered for has accomplished this great record.

The Warriors were the laughing stock of the league. Bad draft picks and bad coaching. Then just last year, it all finally clicked. It happened all so fast and now starting this season, the Warriors have just set the NBA record for best start to the season.

Having seen all the ups and downs of the Warriors from years past, I still can’t grasp the idea that this is the same team I cheered for. But watching this team now and how they’re playing, I’m still on “Cloud 9.” This is like a dream I still don’t want to wake up from. And maybe I’m OK accepting it as that.

It’s that beautiful. It’s that wonderful. I will hold on to this forever.

Thank goodness the Cowboys are wearing white in their #ColorRush game against the Panthers

We had known for a while what the color scheme for the Panthers-Cowboys matchup for their #ColorRush game. The NFL made it official with both teams announcing and revealing their looks.

What the Warriors got right and wrong with their ‘The City’ throwbacks

The Warriors wore their “The City” throwbacks on Tuesday night and it looked great. In fact, anytime they wear this uniform, it’s beautiful.

But there were some things I didn’t like about it. As I mentioned before, the logo on the front looked terrible due to the fabric of the patch. Because of that, it looked like a different color from the actual jersey. And it varied from the angle of the lighting.

But why are they required to wear a patch instead of the stencil of the previous designs?

Cam Newton can keep doing touchdown celebration dances

Cam Newton did nothing wrong. He scored and he danced. But no matter how many haters there are, he had the perfect response. In fact, this response dates back to The U when they were running wild scoring a million touchdowns a game. You want them to stop celebrating? Don’t let them score. Until then, Cam is going to enjoy the game and dance and dab!

Bills and Jets reveal ugly #ColorRush uniforms

We got a sneak of it last week. Now we’ve seen the first matchup. Gross.

I mean, look at this Gumby uniform! Don’t try to mask your shame with the chrome helmets.

LeBron James rips the sleeves off his jersey and instantly becomes a hero to all

Adidas’ sleeved jerseys are stupid. We awaited the day that LeBron James, who had complained about it before, would do something about it.

He did.

Even though he did say that he ripped out of frustration, the message is still loud and clear. The sleeves suck.

Sharing my favorite moment covering Vernon Davis on the 49ers beat

I’m a Vernon Davis fan. Not just him as the football player but also as a human being. I covered the 49ers for five seasons and the final three I got a chance to interact with coaches and players during practices, games and other functions. I wasn’t close to Davis. We kept our relationship professional and I was just fine with that.

I remember during training camp in 2010, a Danish news media outlet flew out two reporters to do a story on the 49ers. They were anxious to talk with Davis because he and then head coach Mike Singletary were paired up to promote the upcoming London game that year. Davis was the biggest name they knew on the 49ers.

When Davis came out to the field to meet with reporters, the Danish reporters started asking him questions. If you’re familiar with the location of the 49ers’ practice facility, you know that it’s near an airport and loud planes frequently fly over the field. Davis heard a plane and stopped talking. He waited for the plane to pass by, knowing that he wanted to make sure these reporters who traveled all this distance got a clear sound bite. He smiled and once the plane passed by, he continued where he left off.

It wasn’t anything spectacular, but it is my favorite moment covering Davis and it had nothing to do with me interviewing him. But it was the perfect example of the kind of man Davis was with the media. Every time he spoke, he always spoke clearly. He thought through his words before speaking. He understood the power of presentation. That fit well with his various passions. He loved to paint and show off his work. He had aspirations to start his own TV show. The man understood how to handle and present himself.

Why am I so obsessed with the Packers-Broncos uniform matchup last night?

For years if you asked me which is my favorite uniform matchup in NFL history, I would tell you to look at Super Bowl XXXII. That game featured the Denver Broncos in their new blue jersey, white pants uniform with orange horns against the classic Green Bay Packers uniform with an updated sleeve stripe.

The reason why I love this uniform matchup is because of two factors:

1 – It was a matchup of a classic uniform versus a modern uniform design. As much as it would have been easier to choose a matchup between two classics, a part of me feels that these two uniforms capture the history of the NFL all in one game. The past and the future all in one.

2 – The colors of these two uniforms are spectacular. Both teams don’t share any of the same colors except for white, which is standard. Secondly, it’s two bold colors in green and navy balanced out with bright colors of yellow (athletic gold) and orange. When both teams are lined up, the colors jump out so well. The key to this matchup is that he Packers are in white, giving their mostly white and yellow uniform a great balance against the green grass. Perfect color balance under the bright California sun.
