The A’s entered this season with a faint hope of maybe securing that last wild card spot. But after an impressive sweep of Detroit (with some fun comebacks sprinkled in there as well) the A’s are only seven games out of the final wild card spot.
Of course this is still only the halfway point and there are plenty of things that can happen.
But this team is surprising many people. With so many starting pitchers injured and some key players also coming on and off the DL, it’s hard to predict. But we had some bats heat up lately. Jed Lowrie has been tremendous during this stretch and the A’s never say die attitude is giving this team a spark.
Guest columnist Brandon Castro (@brandoncee) shares his reasons why we should watch the World Cup even though Team USA didn’t qualify for the tournament.
It is a down time for American sports. The only major sport ongoing at this time is the MLB and even baseball has not hit their midway point to the season.
So I have an alternative.
The FIFA World Cup is one month in duration. Yes, just one month. It started June 14th and a champion will be crowned on July 15th. How is that for a season? Is it quicker that the NBA playoffs? Absolutely!
The closest I had to ever interacting with Dwight Clark was back in 2008 during a phone interview. I don’t even recall what we talked about. I am pretty sure it was about football. After the interview, he was so gracious for me taking the time to talk with him and that he was really happy to have taken the time to speak with me. (Unfortunately records of this interview no longer exist on the Internet.)
There was this one time I was at an event in San Francisco a couple years later to celebrate the anniversary of “The Catch” and I was in person to jot down some quotes from Dwight. That’s pretty much the only time I have ever been in the same room with him.
January 10, 2012 – An event celebrating the 49ers’ Super Bowl success and the 30th anniversary of “The Catch.” This was the best photo I took of the event.
My life would have been extremely different if weren’t for Dwight Clark.
