Samuel Lam’s 2013 Best and Worst Dressed in sports: MLB edition

The Yankees broke away from uniform tradition in 2013.

Today is the final day of 2013 and I’m going to do my year in review of the best and worst uniforms of the year. Unfortunately this year there will be no college sports involved (just way too much for me to cover). Let this be a history lesson for everyone to remember what worked and what should never happen again.

This is a list of strictly my opinion, so feel free to agree or disagree or just take it for what it is.

To qualify for this list, the uniform element must be a new set that debuted and was used for in-game action in 2013. That’s pretty much it. Let’s go take a look at the list for Major League Baseball.

MLB’s Best and Worst Dressed

BEST: MILWAUKEE BREWERS

The best uniform in baseball was worn only during Spring Training.

The Brewers have an OK regular uniform set, but they decided to ask fans to design a new one to wear for spring training. What the ended up with was something that was unique and very exciting. The barrelman was the primary logo and the simplicity of it, including a solid line racing stripe, gave the Brewers the best look in all of baseball this season.

HONORABLE MENTION:
BOSTON RED SOXWhen you wear a uniform with the city name at home to honor the victims of a tragedy, you’re a winner.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS –
These Saturday throwbacks were pretty nice. Not necessary, but it looked good.
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS Honoring the 19 lives lost in the wildfire with this uniform was very classy.
NEW BP CAPS Most of these were refreshing. Not all, but majority rules.
NEW YORK METS They brought back home and road blue alternates, and I am loving their road look so much.
CLEVELAND INDIANS – Nice throwbacks.
SAN DIEGO PADRES You too.
HOUSTON ASTROS – Nice debut into the AL.

WORST: CINCINNATI REDS

Unnecessary Spanish jersey with BP road cap.

I am not a huge fan of of Spanish-themed jerseys unless the style isn’t changed. However, the Reds not only introduced a new style, they decided to one day in May wear it with their BP caps. Talk about a money grab for merchandise sales.

HONORABLE MENTION:
MIAMI MARLINS – They did not wear their regular gray jerseys all year. What a shame. It’s their best look.
NEW YORK YANKEES
A sleeve patch to honor Mariano Rivera is great. The cap patch is overkill.
NEW YORK YANKEES Wearing their BP caps for a regular season game because of merchandise opportunities is so low.
TORONTO BLUE JAYS I know you love Canada, but never ever replace that gorgeous bird on your cap. EVER!
DETROIT TIGERSI like Spanish jerseys, but not if they change the original design this much.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS Spelling.
ALL TEAMS Say no to camo.

MATCHUP OF THE YEAR: ANGELS VS A’S (JULY 29)

The 1969 throwback game.
