Saying farewell to ‘The League’ and its fantasy football idiocy

I remember watching The League for the first time when it aired. The idea of the show was so stupid that I thought it was genius. I had seen commercials for it leading up to the series premiere. It was a bunch of friends who were too obsessed with fantasy football that real-life decisions were somehow tied into their fantasy football decisions. I loved the show from the start. I didn’t think the American public would dig it as much as I did.

As the show continued on, we got to see more silliness to keep the show running. A show solely based on fantasy football was going to be a difficult one so they had to include some weird characteristics to the main cast to keep it interesting. Its popularity allowed them to get celebrities and even actual football players to have cameos. Ultimately, it still made fantasy football its central focal point.

I loved every minute of it. I laughed so hard all the time.

If Jimmy Graham gets franchise tagged as a wide receiver, there’s a big potential fantasy impact

We knew it was going to happen. Now Jimmy Graham is confirming that he will get the franchise tag. However, we don’t know what position he will be tagged as. He will make significantly less if he is tagged as a wide receiver, but his party is arguing that because he lines up in the slot so often that he can and should be viewed as a wide receiver (and thus receiving a bigger price tag).

If Graham is tagged as a wide receiver, it will not only affect the Saints financially (and their approach to how they line him up in 2014), but it will also affect the fantasy world.

Will they list him as a wide receiver only? Or maybe a tight end only? Or will he be eligible for both?

Roddy White gives fantasy owners advice on how to play him

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White has been nursing an ankle injury all week. His injury limited his production Sunday. He had only two catches for 19 yards.

Monday morning, White tweeted this out to his concerned fantasy owners.

It’s nice that fantasy has become so important and relevant that White felt the need for that PSA. Football season is truly here!

My own fantasy draft advice that helps you win or lose

I think I am in four leagues this year. I can’t remember. But I do know my football and I have fantasy advice to share. After some hits and misses from last year’s suggestion box, let’s see how this one goes.

These suggestions are just that. I can’t guarantee victory for any of you, but hey, I’ll share what I know.

1 – QB in first round last year was encouraged, but not this year.

Getting a solid running back first and possibly a great tight end is a bigger priority. If you wait four or five rounds, you still have a chance to grab Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning and maybe Robert Griffin III. Trust me, you want to get the harder to come by elite running backs early. It’d be nice to have Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. But if you don’t have to get them early, then you can wait.

On a side note, Colin Kaepernick is the most intriguing quarterback out there. He has a ton of fantasy potential with his arm and legs. But with so little receiver experience, can he be that explosive? I think he can, but don’t draft him too high. If he falls to you in the third round, then go ahead. But not too early.

Head of Yahoo! Sports apologizes for fantasy site’s malfunction

New excuse: Yahoo! Sports wasn’t working

If you had problem with your fantasy lineup this morning on Yahoo!, the head of Yahoo! Sports sends an apology.

This comes a little over 12 hours since the fantasy site failed to load and fantasy football owners who waited until the last minute were scrambling.

Luckily for me, I had my lineup ready. But I did try to check my lineup and was left with pages that didn’t load. I am glad that the head of Yahoo! sent this apology but the timing was just so bad.

Here’s the full letter sent via email to all fantasy users:

Fantasy Football for Beginners

Doing fantasy football for the first time? It will eat you alive!!!

I think I did OK with my fantasy team

Not as insane, but still fun with my friends.

I had my first (and only) fantasy draft this season last night and this is how it all turned out.

This is a 14-team league and I had the last pick, meaning with the snack setting, I had back to back picks throughout the night. Default settings on Yahoo!

My own fantasy draft advice that helps you win or lose

I am only doing one fantasy team this year but I still think that over the past 10 years that I have done fantasy football, I’ve learned a thing or two. Here are some tips for all you fantasy geeks getting ready for the draft this week.

These suggestions are just that. I can’t guarantee victory for any of you, but hey, I’ll share what I know.

1 – QB in first round is OK and is encouraged.

If you have the opportunity to draft Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton or Drew Brees in the first round, you should consider. Based off their performances last year, they should do the same this year and put you up the top in terms of individual scoring.

In the league that used to be about running backs first, now it’s more geared towards the passing game. You should still get a running back in the second round, but if you can secure an elite fantasy quarterback first, that gives you stability in one of the most important positions.
