You remember this story? Kings star DeMarcus Cousins asked the team to remove the Year of the Monkey giveaway shirts on the first day of Black History Month. I get it and it’s just an unfortunate coincidence. But the shirt isn’t racist. But the timing of it just made Cousins think it wasn’t right to distribute the shirts.
So there is no monkey imagery for the Kings this month. Fine. The rest of the league can still move on with it, right?
Take a look at the jersey the Warriors were set to wear for Chinese New Year. Notice the monkey patch on the sleeve?
Happy new year! I’m back in the Bay with my family just enjoying each other’s company. Wishing you all a great new year and much goodness of everything!
It’s good to be back home!
I expected this to happen but I was unsure how the Warriors would go about it. The Rockets already have a Chinese New Year jersey coming out as well but this one by the Warriors is a little curious to me.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to have it be red or yellow instead of slate gray?
Here are some things that are worth noting. Warriors is written out in Chinese on the front. On the sleeve (yes, the stupid sleeves) is an image of a goat, which is the animal for the upcoming new year. Side panels look great and the trim is pretty nice. They will wear it on February 20, the day after the new year and three more times later in the season.
I’m all for this really and the Chinese population in the Bay Area is strong. And I am glad they didn’t add “el” or “los” or some kind of cultural cop out like the NBA has in the past. But I just don’t like the color. Great idea. Not so great execution.
It’s the year of the horse! Cool stuff. I’m away from family so I won’t get to have a big dinner or get red envelopes. I’ll make the most of it.
In the meantime, can somebody get me this? It’s a great jersey that I would love to add to my collection.
This Hawaiian barnstorming team toured the mainland from 1912-1916, taking on college teams, black clubs, and semi-pro teams. The idea that the players attended the “Chinese University Of Hawaii” was a fiction created by the promotors, but the first Hawaiian club consisted of players of Chinese ancestry. Later squads also included native Hawaiian and other ethnicities.
Happy New Year to everyone! The lunar calendar says it’s the year of the snake now!
This is a very important time for me and my family and since moving, I don’t get to see them often. But I will get a chance to see my parents for a day later this week.
This is exciting. I do hope I can get a chance to celebrate with some peoples here and just really welcome in the new year. Time for good food, good times and lots of money.
