The Patriots, for the most part, are a team that nobody likes outside of Massachusetts. Yet somehow when they had to fight against an entity that is more hated — the commissioner — the Patriots are the underdogs.
Sure, the Patriots cheated but in a sense, they still were being hunted down by the guy nobody likes. Tom Brady is one of those people that just seems to have everything right go for him. So when Roger Goodell decided to go after him, Brady somehow turned into the underdog.
With the decision to lift the suspension, Brady is the bad guy that you cheer for. He’s the Heath Ledger’s Joker and Goodell is the boring Batman. In a way, the attempt at justice seemed too boring and the people wanted a renegade.
Still, Goodell will always be public enemy No. 1 in the league no matter what. Even when he attempts to do the right thing and correct the wrongs of the league, his recent failures will cloud his image. He didn’t have to try to take out Brady. Now that he did try to fix what was wrong and failed, his image as the bad guy grew. Brady, the guy nobody really liked, somehow is the one we’re cheering for.
I’ve tried to give Roger Goodell the benefit of the doubt but it’s hard with all this new information coming in. But I do believe that the truth will be uncovered one way or another. Whether it’s through this investigation or not, we will know what really happened. I don’t want to see the NFL turn into a wild circus but it looks like it’s already reached there. I just want to see it get better soon.
Somebody knew about the tape. The NFL received it. But here are two things to wonder. The package was sent to an NFL executive. The voice confirming that the package arrived may have been an intern, a secretary, or something who after saw the video never gave the video to the proper persons.
That has to be the only thing the NFL has as a defense. But realistically, would you believe that story?
There are so many points to this story it’s hard to pinpoint what is real and what is very possibly fabricated. All I know now is that somebody has lied. Maybe multiple people. There’s a cover up somewhere. Trust is broken. I don’t know what to feel about the shield. I know it’s harder for me to believe anything from anybody from any side until this is resolved.
Vernon’s take is a good one. Addressing issues like healthcare, concussions, college players getting some kind of financial compensation and more.
Sean Payton and Roger Goodell in happier times.
I was talking with my friend the other day about the commissioners of the four major sports in America. I told him that all four commissioners aren’t liked by the fan bases they work for. But out of all of them, there was one in my opinion that has at least gained the respect by the fans: the NFL’s Roger Goodell.
In the NHL, Gary Bettman has not been a fan favorite. He has struggled to help maintain interest in the league and throughout the years, a few franchises’ futures have been in jeopardy under his watch.
In the NBA, David Stern is viewed as the bad guy despite his efforts to make basketball fun. But instead, he took away all the fun and this past offseason’s lockout might have been the last straw.
