San Jose State University brings back track & field

One of the greatest things about my alma mater is its rich history in track & field. But for some time, the program was dissolved and it was only a memory. The practice field was just an open public area next to the football stadium. The only true reminder of its greatness is the statue of John Carlos and Tommie Smith.

But today the school announced that in a couple years, the track & field program would return. This makes me so happy. For what Speed City meant to San Jose and the campus, it is great to bring back one of the school’s biggest and most important sports programs.

This was amazing. I am so happy!

One year ago today: SJSU wins the Military Bowl

One year ago today. I was there. What a great time. Great memories!

To relive them, here’s the tag I used during my trip last year.

That SJSU-Fresno St. game was just so thrilling

That game yesterday was everything that I wanted and it delivered. It was everything SJSU needed to show the world that they are still a team that can win big games.

What we got was a thrilling, exhilarating game like I’ve never seen before. It was a game of two halves. It was the unstoppable offenses in the first half and the clutch defensive stops in the second half.

Needing to win that game (and break the three-game losing streak) to make it back to a bowl game was a big deal for the program. SJSU needed it so bad and taking out #16 ranked and undefeated Fresno State to do it in the process makes it so sweet.

SJSU basketball’s new floor design has taken Sparta to a whole new level

What do you get when you mix two wood finishes, a large center court logo that isn’t centered and an image from the movie 300? You get this!

I’m not really big on these overly designed courts. They’re only nice if it isn’t too much of a gimmick. I know that the courts of the past in the NBA in the 1990s were like this, but they added character to the team. This one does, but it’s still a little too much for me.

First of all, I never liked having two finishes to the wood. Inside the arc is real dark and the rest is a lighter finish. I would much prefer it being the light one.

San Jose State Football finishes No. 21 in the AP Poll

Final AP Poll rankings.

Final AP Poll rankings.

With the conclusion of the very boring BCS title game, the AP Poll is officially out for the final time this season and San Jose State is ranked No. 21.

After being ranked No. 24 before their win at the Military Bowl, I had big hopes in that the team’s potential in remaining in the Top 25 with a win and boosting up the program.

This is one step towards that mark. This is pretty awesome!

Mike MacIntyre leaves SJSU for Colorado and it’s tough news to take in

Mike MacIntyre took SJSU to a 10-2 record this season.

The news is circulating that Mike MacIntyre is leaving SJSU to coach Colorado University.

There are a lot of things that I am feeling right now about the news and it’s hard for me to put them in words. First of all, I am a little angry that MacIntyre would do this. He had something good at SJSU and people there loved him. He saved the program and made it relevant again.

Then I think about the entire coaching search that has been going on for the past two weeks. He had been linked to so many schools and knowing that he was a good coach, it’s no surprise that a school would want. In fact, I knew it was a matter of time before he would go to a bigger school. I was hoping he’d leave next year, but this isn’t too shocking.

SJSU football’s 10 wins, an awesome swan song and all the goodies of going bowling

Isn’t this awesome?

San Jose State football finished with a 10-2 record after their win over Louisiana Tech. It was the program’s first 10-win season since 1987. LA Tech had defeated SJSU in their past five meetings and Tech was actually ranked in the Top 25 this year.

But SJSU now can go dummy. They finish in second place in the WAC’s final season. It’s a bittersweet farewell to the conference as SJSU goes to the Mountain West, but this season was fantastic for the conference’s swan song. A thrilling football game between two of college football’s rising programs.

It’s pretty crazy that the last time SJSU was in a bowl game was in 2006. They barely were a good team that year, but they won enough games and went to the New Mexico Bowl. I don’t know what’s in store for SJSU, but I really hope I can go and watch them play. It would be fantastic. A Top 25 ranking would be awesome too!

SJSU’s win over BYU last night was something special for that campus

Celebrating a great 20-14 win over BYU.

I grew up in the East Bay and naturally my cheering interests when it came to college sports was with the California Golden Bears. It was easy to cheer for Cal. They had a cooler team color scheme, they had at the time a better team and I knew more people with connections to that school.

San Jose State never came into the picture for me when I was a kid. In fact, I only saw highlights every now and then of SJSU football and thought that it was OK. It wasn’t until I started to apply for colleges did SJSU football becoming a deciding factor. I got accepted to San Francisco State and UC Santa Cruz but the reason why I chose SJSU was because of its distance and they had a football team I could cheer for.

The football team at that time was around .500 and that was enough for me to believe that team would be something. Last night was a wave of emotions all over again for my alma mater’s football team.
