The Panthers and Jaguars got it right 20 seasons ago

The Panthers and Jaguars played each other for their first game.

Both the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars are celebrating their 20th season in the NFL. I have a soft spot for expansion teams and when they both made the playoffs in their second year, it was a huge deal for me as a young NFL fan.

I was looking through some old photos and I found this gem. Take a look at the above photo. Their first ever NFL game was a preseason matchup against each other. Look at the uniforms. One team remained mostly the same. The other is completely different.

I like the Panthers uniform and I am so glad they kept it. Although I do wish they had kept wearing the blue socks with the home set. The Jags on the other hand, got it right from the start. Simple pant stripes, great logo, no over muddling of design. It was a great look and it should have stayed. It was a better alternative than the uniform they initially planned to wear.

As the NFL season approaches, it’s crazy to think that it was around 20 years ago I started watching football and part of the reason why were these two expansion teams. A lot has changed since then. Well, not so much for the Panthers. But looking at these original sets, I wish they would have kept them.
